What is Grey’s Anatomy About?
Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama that follows the personal and professional lives of surgical interns, residents, and attendings at a fictional hospital, Seattle Grace Hospital. The series began in 2005 on ABC and has run for 20 seasons with a total of 430 episodes.
Most of the show follows Dr. Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, chronicling her progression from surgical intern to fully qualified doctor to the hospital’s chief of general surgery. But with such a long-running show, the original cast hasn’t stayed throughout its entirety.
By the 19th season, only three of the original cast are still around: Pompeo, Wilson, and Pickens. After the 19th season, when Pompeo took a major step back, the show turned into an ensemble format as it continued on its story.
Meaning Behind the Name
Interestingly enough, the title is actually an allusion to Gray’s Anatomy, a classic human anatomy textbook that was written by Henry Gray and illustrated by Henry Vandyke Carter.
It was first published in 1858 and has received multiple revised editions, with the most current one, the 42nd (created in October 2020), yet remaining the standard reference, and is often considered the “doctors bible”.
Notable Cast
While the majority of the show follows along with Dr. Meredith Grey, an aspiring surgeon and daughter of one of the greatest surgeons, Dr. Ellis Grey, it also follows the lives of her colleagues and their personal and professional challenges as well. Before we find out where to watch Grey’s Anatomy, let’s check out the cast members, especially a few examples of the crucial original cast members.
