Why do content creators slam reviewers for not liking their work? It only encourages more negativity — and it’s happening again. This time, it’s Apple TV+’s The Morning Show director Mimi Leder calling out early critics as “Apple haters.”

When those reviews came in, I didn’t know what show they were watching. And I just kind of thought they were nuts, I just felt there were a lot of Apple haters and wanting Apple to fail.

Many will file these remarks next to Sherlock‘s writer Mark Gatiss, who told fans to “read a children’s book.” Or alongside Rian Johnson, who called Star Wars fans “manbabies” (below).

Having watched the series so far and now, having checked out the early reviews, you can see why the director said what she did.

Early critics of “The Morning Show”

Many reviews called the show dull and criticized Apple TV+ for coming to market with something so uninspired. Rolling Stone took it to another level.

Apple TV+ may think its stories are different than everyone else’s, but they aren’t. Nor are they told well enough to make up for that. The show, and the service, don’t need to exist, and thus far aren’t justifying that existence.

Rolling Stone

These early critics reviewed the first two episodes only, which have strong acting and set the scene for the season. So why the extreme opinion? Could it be the reported cost of The Morning Show that was released prior to these early reviews?

Big money, big expectations

It was alleged that The Morning Show was costing Apple $300 million for two seasons. If those numbers were accurate, it would have become the most expensive show ever.

Despite reports now rubbishing these costs, the actual figure hasn’t been given. Perhaps early critics thought they would be getting $15 million episodes. With that in mind, you can see why they would be underwhelmed. For reference, episodes during the final season of Game of Thrones cost $15 million each.

Regardless of cost, in the sea of early negatives, the light at the end of the tunnel for The Morning Show is that audiences have received it positively. Our very own review considers it binge-worthy.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a great audience score of 95 percent. There’s hardly a better place to see the difference between critics and audience opinion. Critics on the site give it a much more underwhelming 63 percent.
