Martin Scorsese’s Netflix epic The Irishman is 3 hours and 30 minutes long. It’s not far off the length of a modern TV series, which is usually eight episodes at about 30 minutes each. So why not try this super smart way to turn The Irishman into a miniseries?
Perfect miniseries timings
- Part one: “I Heard You Paint Houses” (Start to 49:00)
- Two: “Hoffa” (49:00 to 1:40:00)
- Three: “What Kind of Fish?” (1:40:00 to 2:47:30)
- Four: “It Is What It Is” (2:47:30 to the end)
Of course, if you’re a serious movie fan, you’ll skip work and spend a day chilling with uncle Scorsese’s latest. We say it’s worth binging in our review.
Theatrical running time
Having watched The Irishman, I can honestly say it would have been better served as a miniseries. It’s a fantastic movie, but at this running time, it does become an endurance test halfway through.
Considering The Irishman miniseries timings are perfect, it would come as no surprise if this was originally intended as a four-part series. Or, Netflix could do an alternative viewing version to make it easier to consume in the future.
However, with Scorsese at the helm, he was going to have his creative vision fully realized in any event.
A bigger question is, what would this movie be if Netflix weren’t involved? There is no way 210 minutes would hit the theatres. It would either become a two-part movie or an hour would get cut. That second outcome would have been a tragedy.
Don’t miss out
Whether you watch Netflix’s The Irishman as a miniseries or in one sitting, one thing’s for certain: you won’t regret it, and it’s proof Martin Scorsese tells the best stories.
