Apple TV+ stopped the premiere of The Banker Wednesday night after sexual abuse allegations surfaced last week. Clearly those allegations have troubled Apple, as they made the decision to pull the movie at the last minute. Here is their official statement.
“We purchased The Banker earlier this year as we were moved by the film’s entertaining and educational story about social change and financial literacy. Last week some concerns surrounding the film were brought to our attention. We, along with the filmmakers, need some time to look into these matters and determine the best next steps. In light of this, we are no longer premiering The Banker at AFI Fest.”
Deadline Apple Announcement
The movie stars Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson as 1960s business revolutionaries. Based on the true story of two African Americans that build an empire using a white man as the face of their organization.
Throughout the story, Mackie and Jackson take roles as a janitor and chauffeur within their empire. It’s not long until their success is known and the federal government steps in. You can see the trailer here.
Sexual abuse allegations
Anthony Mackie plays Bernard Garrett Sr. in the movie, one of the two empire builders. The sexual abuse allegations are against Garrett Sr.’s son, Bernard Garrett Jr. The allegations are reportedly by his half-sisters, Cynthia, and Sheila Garrett, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Obviously, the allegations are serious. Bernard Garrett Jr. consulted on the movie. Plus, he has been part of Apple’s Q&A promotions since its acquisition earlier in 2019, so the decision to pull the movie makes sense.
The future of “The Banker”
Our deepest sympathies go out to all impacted by these troubling allegations. Considering how Apple reacting to this news, it’s unlikely The Banker will make its original release plans.
The movie was meant to be released in theatres from December 6th and launch on Apple TV+ in 2020. Right now, it’ll be a surprise if Apple releases it.
