Netflix Review: Da 5 Bloods

Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods is a confusing mess, lost somewhere between a political statement and a heist movie. It does nothing well unless you count the retro-style trailer, which had our excitement levels amped up to a ten.

The fact it sucks is a tragedy, especially as the movie includes fantastic acting talent, including Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty), Clarke Peters (Jessica Jones), and Norm Lewis (Scandal). Yet, none of them can save the awful script which is plagued with ridiculous coincidences that play out as if a seven-year-old had written it.

Underneath the script issues, bizarre directorial decisions, and the ridiculousness of the heist portion of the movie is a political message that would have been a better movie. If only Spike Lee had focused on that side of the story, we could have seen four war heroes returning to Vietnam and uncovering how life moved on. Instead, we get 150-minutes of nonsense that’s bordering on unwatchable.

VERDICT: Kill.
