He-Man-sized nostalgia trip

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was one of the most popular cartoons of the ’80s. It was in production from 1983 to 1985 and ran for two 65-episode seasons. The show continued to air until the end of the decade and left a lasting legacy on the children who grew up watching it.

The story is a classic tale of good vs. evil and is set on Eternia, a planet where swords, sandals, and magic are everywhere. Prince Adam protects the planet and when he says “by the power of Greyskull,” he becomes He-Man. Check out the transformation below.

He-Man’s nemesis, Skeletor, wants the power for himself, putting them in an eternal battle. Both He-Man and Skeletor have an array of companions, including Battle Cat, Teela, Man-At-Arms and more. We can expect to see all of them in the series, as it’s a continuation, rather than a reboot.

Respecting the material

What’s amazing is that the new Netflix series led by Kevin Smith isn’t a rehash. Instead, it’s a continuation of unresolved storylines. This is a clear sign Netflix respect the source material. Plus, by signing up quality acting talent, Smith and Co. are proving they’re taking the show seriously. As a result this new series, Masters of the Universe could be a benchmark for classic cartoon continuations.
