On Super Bowl 54 Sunday, Marvel Studios rolled out a fascinating TV spot featuring their three upcoming Disney+ TV series. Despite being only 30 seconds long, there was a lot to digest from the footage.
Although it was initially thought all series would begin streaming in 2021, Disney+ recently bumped The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision up to later this year. Loki is still slated for next year.
Let’s go over the biggest takeaways from the Super Bowl spot Disney+ and Marvel put together for us superhero fanatics. Check out the mini-trailer in its entirety below, too.
Are Sam AND Bucky Captain America?
The opening of the spot kicks off with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) removing Captain America’s shield from the tree in which it was wedged.
Sam took Old Man Cap’s shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The presumption was he’d take up the mantle. Considering the epic shield throw he has, it looks like Sam has super strength.
On the other hand, that could just be a super aerodynamic artifact. Unlike Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Sam doesn’t have the advantage of the super soldier serum. At least, we haven’t seen it yet.
It also doesn’t look like Sam in the Captain America garb in a brief shot of Cap walking out on a football field. Does that mean Bucky is suiting up from time to time as well?

Wanda & Vision shift through realities
WandaVision promises to be a trippy ride. Although they’re probably the least-anticipated Marvel characters on their own for a Disney+ series, this Super Bowl spot showed their combination and storyline could be the most compelling.
Whereas Loki is going to wreak havoc as he usually does, he likely won’t change as much with his one tangential timeline. Consider, though, that WandaVision is meant to tie directly into Doctor Strange’s next movie outing.
Although director Scott Derrickson departed the second Strange film over creative differences, he tweeted the following during the Super Bowl:
Given the brief clips we got from Sunday, it looks like Wanda and Vision are passing through multiple timelines/dimensions/realities. Wanda has her dark side Scarlet Witch persona to contend with, too.
Vision’s powers are largely ambiguous in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also died in Avengers: Infinity War. The trippy nature of WandaVision‘s footage just feeds the hype for the Disney+ series.

What’s Zemo’s master plan?
Although he ended Captain America: Civil War in defeat, Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) appears alive and well.
Zemo re-brainwashed Bucky in the aforementioned film. He generated a serious conflict between Avengers leaders Cap and Iron Man as a result. His terrorist attack also led to Black Panther’s father dying.
In the TV spot, Zemo is staring down the barrel of a gun. Bucky looks ready to kill him. However, we see bullet shells falling harmlessly to the side with Zemo unharmed, staring confidently and defiantly at the former Winter Soldier.
Motivated by his family dying in the Sokovia climax of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Zemo will stop at nothing to harm the heroes. It’s easy to see why he wants to stir up conflict. But what was Civil War really setting up?
It’s possible Zemo could’ve tried to level the playing field by garnering superpowers of his own. Otherwise, he’s going to find some clever way to create conflict between Bucky and Sam in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Loki’s mischief at an all-time high
Marvel Cinematic Universe villains got a bad rap for a while. Then, Tom Hiddleston chewed the scenery in Thor and, more notably, in The Avengers as the God of Mischief.
Loki has been a delight throughout his MCU tenure. Despite his apparent perishing at the hands of Thanos in Infinity War, he’s found a way to endure.
In Endgame, Loki obtains the Space Stone, and this Disney+ series deals with him creating his own timeline. Loki lives!
And we don’t see anything from the Super Bowl spot except for the titular character, who looks to be in some sort of prison garb, saying, “I’m going to burn this place to the ground.”
