The animated film Onward hits theaters on March 6, 2020, but when will Pixar’s next highly anticipated project enjoy its release date on Disney+?
Based on the projected theatrical run and eventual transition to video and streaming services, a good educated approximation is October 6, 2020.
A magical cast, a mystical (modern) world
Here’s the official premise description from Disney:
Set in a suburban fantasy world, Disney and Pixar’s “Onward” introduces two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there.
Disney
The two brothers in this story are voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. They play Spider-Man and Star Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, respectively.
Both actors shine as comic-book franchise leads with offbeat, quirky comedy. That pairing alone is enough to get excited about. Then there’s Seinfeld legend Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer rounding out the core voice cast.
Onward has an intriguing setting as well, though. It’ll feature fantastical creatures, yet within the context of modern suburbia. Plenty of hilarious situational comedy should naturally stem from that.
What’s also great is this film will deal with family themes, and Pixar specializes in that area. That’s a big reason why many of its movies appeal to all audience demographics.
Holland and Pratt have explored family dynamics in the MCU to great effect, so Pixar has to be all the more thrilled to land them as squabbling siblings.
Four of Pixar’s prior five releases were sequels. Between this and Soul, the celebrated studio will have two original titles in theaters by June. Color me excited, because new IPs are always refreshing to see.
In a world dominated by sequels, Pixar is bringing the new-wave heat. Hooray! Onward will be yet another wonderful, family-friendly addition to Disney+.
4K/HDR/Dolby Atmos
The Mouse House is bringing out all the bells, whistles and stunning visuals, which means Onward will be presented on Disney+ in 4K, HDR, and Dolby Atmos.
You won’t have to pay extra for higher quality, either. The $6.99 monthly price tag of Disney+ will offer the best possible presentation of the film in terms of video and audio quality.
