Had enough of the big titles that are constantly being recommended? Want some hidden gems, or just plain weird movies on Amazon Prime? Then you’re in luck because these are the top five of the weirdest titles in a range of genres, from comedies to thrillers.
Whether you’re wanting something a big off-the-wall from big stars like Ryan Gosling, or unknown titles from another country like The Handmaiden, these weird movies on Amazon Prime are the perfect options to scratch that itch.
5. Lars and The Real Girl, 2007
Weird movies on Amazon Prime have a wide range of genres and for the comedy-drama, Lars and the Real Girl is a great example. The 2007 movie stars Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, Kelli Garner, and Patricia Clarkson. The movie received positive reviews by critics, however, was a commercial failure, maybe because the plot was a bit twisted. Thankfully, Gosling received nominations for the Golden Globe for Best Actor and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performances.
The movie centers around Lars Lindstrom, who lives a secluded life in a small town. His mother died when he was born, which made his father grieve and ultimately become distant from Lars. His only brother, Gus, left as soon as he could support himself, which created a very traumatic and lonely life for Lars. The kind-hearted man is socially awkward, and the plot follows along his blooming romantic relationship with an anatomically correct doll, a RealDoll named Bianca.

4. Rubber, 2010
Another one of the weird movies on Amazon Prime is a 2010 French independent horror comedy. Indie horror films usually have the best kind of thrills and scares, and Rubber did a decent enough job to receive positive reviews from critics when it premiered at the Critics’ Week in the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. While the thrills and chills might be there, it’s centered around something completely bizarre.
Starring Stephen Spinella, Roxana Mesquida, Jack Plotnick, Haley Ramm, and more, Rubber focuses on a tire that comes to life and kills people with psychokinetic powers. We’ve seen a lot of movies where strange things come to life, like The Car (1977) or Killdozer (1974), but it’s usually creepy things like dolls, like Chucky (1998). If you want a unique horror movie, then this is the one for you.

3. Trollhunter, 2010
The dark fantasy option for weird movies on Amazon Prime goes to Trollhunter. The 2010 is a Norwegian film made as a “found footage” mockumentary, or simply a movie that is a parody or mockery of a documentary. The film features a mixed cast of Norwegian comedians including Otto Jesperson, and small actors like Tomas Alf Larsen and Glenn Tosterud. The movie might be strange, but it received positive reviews from both Norwegian critics and US critics but is still quite small.
The movie follows a group of students who investigate a series of mysterious bear killings, but learn that there are much more dangerous things going out in the wilderness. When they start to follow a mysterious hunter, they realize he’s more than what meets the eye, as he’s a troll hunter.

2. The Handmaiden, 2016
From Norwegian to South Korean, some weird movies on Amazon Prime Video explore several countries and cultures. The Handmaiden is a great example and is an interesting historical psychological thriller to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Starring Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, Ha Jung-woo, and Cho Jin-woong, the 2016 film was a hit upon release by critics and won the category for Best Film Not in the English Language at the 71st British Academy Film Awards.
It’s inspired by the 2002 novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, however, they changed the setting from Victorian-era Britain to Korea under Japanese Colonial Rule. The plot follows a girl who is hired as a handmaid to a Japanese heiress who lives a secluded life on a countryside estate. But the maid has a hidden secret, as she is a pickpocket recruited by a swindler to help seduce the Lady and steal her fortune.
