The list of swoon-worthy romantic male movie characters could go on and on all day long. However, one’s swoonworthiness does not necessarily qualify as husband material. A character has to go an extra mile to earn that title. Here are 8 male movie characters that are husband material (in my completely biased opinion).
8. Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice
Based on the classic novel, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the story about Elizabeth Bennet’s love story with Mr. Darcy has been depicted many times throughout the media. However, specifically, Colin Firth’s portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the BBC’s version of Pride and Prejudice has captured viewers’ hearts.
Though fans were taken by Firth’s brooding and handsome Mr. Darcy, it is his romantic gestures that make Mr. Darcy one of the male movie characters that are husband material.
7. Patrick from 10 Things I Hate About You
Patrick, played by Heath Ledger in 10 Things I Hate About You is an international heartthrob and known to be one of the greatest romantic male movie characters of all time.
Most prominently defined by his serenading of the female romantic lead, Kat, by singing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” during her soccer practice with the help of the school band, Patrick showed us what it means to be wooed and has raised the bar for all men, making him husband material on all accounts.

6. Henry from 50 First Dates
50 First Dates is a 2004 romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Sandler plays Henry Roth, a man who falls in love with a girl named Lucy, Barrymore, but after a devastating car accident, Lucy loses her memory from anything after the accident each day.
Henry loves Lucy so much that each day he reminds her who he is by showing her a video he made and makes her fall in love with him day in and day out. Though it is hard work, Henry sticks with Lucy because their love is so pure and all-encompassing. This kind of unfaltering, everlasting commitment is what you need out of a husband and is what makes Henry Roth husband material.
5. Cal from Crazy, Stupid, Love
Cal from Crazy, Stupid, Love is the epitome of husband material. Played by Steve Carell in the 2011 romantic comedy, Cal is going through a divorce with his long-time wife and grappling with that loss.
However, throughout this challenging time, Cal’s commitment to his family never wavers and continues to fight for them. Cal holds endless love for his family and does not want to lose that. He also remains extremely protective of both his wife and children, making him one of the male movie characters that is husband material.

4. Nick from Crazy Rich Asians
In Crazy Rich Asians, Henry Golding plays the swoon-worthy Nick Young who is a billionaire set on marrying his long-time girlfriend, Rachel. Though Nick and Rachel’s different socioeconomic statuses threaten their relationship, Nick makes sure he does not lose the love of his life.
What makes Nick Young one of the male movie characters worthy of the title of husband material is his dedication to loving Rachel, despite what is expected of him. Though Rachel may not meet the standards that Nick’s mother set for his future wife, Nick proves to Rachel that she is everything he could ever dream of and more.
3. Andrew from The Proposal
In the 2009 romantic comedy The Proposal, Ryan Reynolds plays Andrew Paxton, the assistant to high-powered book editor Margaret Tate, played by Sandra Bullock. The two pose as married so Margaret is not deported to Canada. This witty, tender, chemistry-filled film displays many red flags such as pretending to be married so someone isn’t deported (which is very illegal).
However, it also displays many green flags in the relationship. Andrew and Margaret bring out the best in each other as every couple should. Andrew however goes the extra mile, displaying many qualities that earn him the title of husband material. Andrew sticks with Margaret through her incredibly illegal scheme, learns to love her quirks, supports her through her own battles, and makes her laugh. He is also not afraid to call her out when she is being too pushy or strict. All of this makes Reynolds’ character one of the male movie characters that are husband material.

2. Harry from When Harry Met Sally
When Harry Met Sally is one of the most classic and well-known romantic comedies of all time. Following Harry and Sally throughout their relationship as friends to lovers, the film depicts relationships as complicated but worth the wait.
The most important part of marriage is friendship and companionship and no one fits this bill like Harry and Sally. Harry’s dedication to their friendship, even though he doesn’t believe it is ever possible for a man and woman to be just friends, proves he is one of the male movie characters who is husband material.
1. Ian from My Big Fat Greek Wedding
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a 2002 romantic comedy starring Nia Vardalos and John Corbett. The film follows a young Greek woman, Toula, who falls in love with a non-Greek man, Ian, and grapples with how her family will handle it.
Ian Miller, the main male love interest in the film, is husband material if you have ever seen it. Not only does he love Toula unconditionally, but he helps her embrace herself and her Greek heritage, allowing her a newfound confidence in her identity. He also helps her overcome the pressure her family puts on her. This kind of relentless support is what makes Ian the most husband material of male movie characters.
